At Tiawichi Research, we believe that any software we develop for a client is delivered with source code. Most of our clients do not care one way or another as long as the application does what they want it to do. Perhaps those that do care, if only a little, consider owning the source code a security blanket.
We call it insurance. If the key developer steps in front of a bus while visiting a client in New York, the client has the source code. If unforeseen needs develop, other firms can step into the breach to fulfill those requirements.
That is one aspect of open source, owning the source code. Another aspect of open source software is the universe of software known as FOSS – Free, Open Source Software (see wikipedia). The contents of this site are hosted on a Linux server, composed on Wordpress, and delivered via the Apache web-server. All freely available, both in terms of money and freedom to alter the software in any way you see fit.
What does this mean for our clients? When we develop a software application, we try not to re-invent the wheel (or GUI, database, whatever) every time. We select the best-in-class open source solution on which we build your application. This results in a very stable, timely, and low-cost solution for our clients. When we implement a sophisticated, data-driven web site, we prefer to use a pre-existing, easily supported infrastructure that is not tied to a vendor.
Thus we are able to focus on your requirements and build out a system that meets your needs for far less capital.
